Best of the Dominican Republic

Tucked next to Haiti in the Caribbean Sea, the Dominican Republic (or DR) is only a two hour flight from Miami. Natural beauty, beaches, history, resorts, and adventure are just a few things that draw travelers to the DR. Here, we’ll explore the best things to do.

Ride the 27 Waterfalls of Rio Damajagua

Rent a helmet and a lifejacket and head out with a guide to experience this truly unique and exhilarating experience. Jump into crystal clear pools and slide down waterfalls in this idyllic rain-forested region of the DR. A guide is required and although it only takes about four hours to hit all of the waterfalls, it is best to head out early to beat the crowds.

Santo Domingo

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990, the historic district called La Zona Colonial boasts cathedrals and monasteries which are among the oldest in the new world. You can easily spend a day meandering through these streets and shooting photos.

If an all-inclusive resort is your style, head to the south shore where the majority are concentrated and you’ll have your pick.

Kite Boarding

Conditions are perfect for kiteboarding in the DR.  Take some lessons and rent gear at the highly rated GoKite Cabarete Kiteboarding School or Laurel Eastman Kiteboarding School.

Visit a Coffee Plantation

Head to Spirit Mountain Coffee to hike through their Ecological Reserve and learn about their organic coffee operations. They have an educational agrotourism trail, miles of trails for hiking and biking, and spots to camp as well.

Retreat to the Samana Peninsula

Check out this small, mellow peninsula which is widely considered to be the prettiest part of the DR. Coconut-covered mountains dramatically fall towards white sand beaches, calm waters, and vibrant coral reefs. This is a great place to unwind after a week of adventure.
