The nightlife in Brazil is not your typical party, rave, or even house-party due to their mix of culture in different state. The economy is not great to begin with but that doesn’t stop the locals from partying all night till the next day, believe me it happens. In most countries they stop serving alcohol past 2am but not in Brazil: They offer curbside alcohol 24/7 out of a cool box! Since the party is all night till the DJ leaves, Brazilian usually don’t enter a club or a balada (dance party in Portuguese) after 11pm.

The style of drinking or socializing establishment

Botecos

The small street corner bar that serves alcohol along with food. These places are good to practice your Portuguese. Also recommended as to starting out your night.

Smart bar and clubs

These places are for people who have money to spend. They are very much what you’ll find in your home town and you’ll have to show your ID card to get in.

Bar Restaurants

Your typical bar in a restaurant where you can get a full course menu and drinks at the same time or just drinks.

Street parties

There are whole blocks in most of Brazilian cities turned over to night life and tons of people come out. These are your usual places where you’ll see people selling drinks on the curbside out of cool boxes.

Baile Funk parties

These types of parties are not located in tourist part of town. They are often held in the favelas with locals. The ultimate experience for the backpacking traveler. Important note: If you care to visit baile funk, make sure to have someone who knows the area well and doesn’t has enemies. The usual funks are organized and paid for by trafficates and can go from fun to a police raid real fast. Another example, check out City of God (Cidade de Deus) video.

Micareta

Is like a mini carnival out of carnival season. They take place all over Brazil, both large and small, but same rules apply as Baile Frunk parties. The three largest micaretas in Brazil are:

  • Carnatal – Takes place in December during Christmas time in the city of Natal in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. This 4-day micareta has attracted more than 1 million people a year since 1991!
  • The Pré-Caju – Takes place in January in Aracaju, in the Brazilian state Sergipe. In the four days this micareta runs, it attracts over 800 thousand people.
  • Fortal – Takes place in July in the capital city Fortaleza, in the Brazilian state Ceará. This micareta attracts a crowd of around 700 thousand per year.

Rave

A rave in Brazil is like a rave anywhere else. The difference is that the best ones will be located outside of the big cities. It’s a lot cheaper to build a rave in the middle of nowhere than in the city. These are the parties you don’t want to miss, they go all night and day and sometimes they are held on the beach.
