Less than one hour driving distance from the capital city of Quintana Roo, Chetumal, you can find a unique piece of paradise – Bacalar. This small lakeside town is located in the south of Quintana Roo, Mexico and is considered to be a magical place. Why magical? Have you ever heard about “los pueblos mágicos”? The term “pueblos mágicos” refers to the selected group of Mexican towns or villages, with exceptional natural, historical or cultural characteristics making them magical and impossible to forget. The pueblo mágico Bacalar gets its magic from the breathtaking lagoon “Laguna de Bacalar”, which surrounds this beautiful village. Bacalar lagoon is the second largest lagoon in Mexico, fed by different underground rivers that run through Yucatan. It is also known as the lake of 7 colors, since it reflects various shades of blue and turquoise. This phenomenon is caused by the crystal clear water and different shades of sandy bottoms that gives the lake the beautiful effect of having various shades of blue.

The principal attraction is the lake so there are various options of watersports to choose from. One of the most favorite activities is exploring the lake by kayak, but if you prefer a less sporty way there are numerous affordable tours that offer boat cruises on the lake.

Visit the fort of San Felipe
San Felipe fort was built in the 18th century and later converted into a museum. Besides the stunning lake view, the fort offers exhibits with lots of artifacts from the era of pirates and caste wars.

Dive in Cenote Azul

Just 4 kilometers from city center of Bacalar, you can find one of the most popular and deepest cenote in the region (90meters), Cenote Azul. Due to its depth it is a very popular spot for diving.
